"Ten Degrees of Separation ", 2011

Warehouse Theater Gallery, Greenville, SC

The brick walls, architectural details, and lighting fixtures of the Warehouse Theater Gallery inspired me to create a site-specific installation of this series of photographs. A vintage 4x5´´ class photo has been repeatedly enlarged, cropped, and re-photographed several times using a variety of cameras. The final images shown here reveal the effects of digitization from a large-pixel toy video camera and projection onto the television screen. The faces are at least ten degrees of separation from the originals, hence, the title "Ten Degrees of Separation", yet each retains recognizable features of a unique individual. Each print is overlaid with a hand-written alphanumeric code. Where does identity reside? At what point is it lost?
